Why You Need a Written Attendance Policy

Without a written policy, managers apply rules inconsistently. This breeds resentment and can expose the company to legal risk. A written policy treats everyone equally and makes expectations crystal clear.

What to Include

  • Working hours and shift timings
  • Grace period for late arrivals
  • How absences should be reported (to whom, by when)
  • Consequences for excessive absenteeism
  • How attendance links to leave and payroll

Sample Policy Statement

Employees are expected to be present and ready to work at their scheduled start time. Lateness of more than 15 minutes without prior notice will be recorded. Three unexcused absences in a calendar month may result in a formal warning.

Distribute and Train

A policy only works if people know about it. Share it during onboarding, post it on your internal portal, and train managers to apply it consistently.
